The Enterprise Architect's Guide to AI-Ready Systems

Building AI-ready enterprise systems requires more than adding an API call to a language model. It requires architectural decisions that separate concerns, manage state, handle latency, and degrade gracefully when AI services are unavailable. Enterprise architects must think about these constraints before writing the first line of AI integration code.

The first architectural principle is the AI Adapter Pattern. Your business logic should never call an AI provider directly. Instead, introduce an adapter layer — a service module in OutSystems that abstracts the AI provider. This means switching from OpenAI to Azure OpenAI to a locally hosted model requires changing one module, not hunting through business logic.

Context Management is the second critical concern. Large Language Models are stateless by default; the conversation context must be managed by your application. Design a ConversationSession entity that stores the message history, session metadata, and any retrieved context. OutSystems' server actions can build and trim this context window before every AI call, keeping costs and latency predictable.

Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) transforms generic AI responses into enterprise-grade answers. Your OutSystems application maintains a vector store or structured knowledge base. Before each LLM call, retrieve the three most relevant documents and inject them into the prompt. This grounds the AI's response in your organization's actual data, dramatically reducing hallucinations.

Latency handling separates production AI systems from prototypes. AI calls can take 2–30 seconds depending on model and context size. OutSystems' asynchronous BPT processes and Client Actions with optimistic UI patterns keep users informed and engaged during long-running AI operations. Never block the UI thread waiting for an AI response.

Finally, design for graceful degradation. Define a Fallback Strategy for every AI feature. If the AI returns a confidence score below threshold — fall back to a rules-based response. If the AI service is unavailable — serve a cached response or a clear user message. Enterprise applications must function even when AI services are degraded, because business operations cannot pause for an API outage.
